Pete Wiens- Woodworking Instructor

Meet Our Instructors

Pete

Born and raised in Asuncion Paraguay by German parents until I was eight. My father had a tool and die shop that I loved hanging out in to watch him make things on the machinery. Then in 1958 we immigrated to Traverse City, Michigan area where I finished out school and college. My career became being an airline pilot. My passion was anything mechanical, working with my hands and a little adventure. Now retired from Delta airlines after 33 years of flying around the world I am spending most of my time on the lathe applying the forms and shapes I have experienced from cultures around the globe.

One of the first things I turned was a baby rattle for my son in 1983 and I have never stopped turning since. My passion in turning is form. Well executed form never gets old. It’s presence captivates and fills you with awe. My passion is to create that kind of powerful elegant form in each piece I turn.I am a member of the American Association Woodturners, The Tennessee Association of Woodturners and serves on the TAW board. I teach the TAW’s Saturday turn ins, volunteer at The Narrowgate Foundation and Demonstrates for various clubs.
