Rodney Smith- Woodworking Instructor

Meet Our Instructors

Rodney

Rod served a ten thousand hour apprenticeship in the metal pattern maker trade. Also, six hundred fifty hours of technical schooling at Henry Ford Trade School. When the pattern trade slowed down, Rod found work in the Die Model trade in the Quality Control Department. In Quality Control, Rod worked on various types of tooling, including Automotive, Aircraft and even stereo speakers.Rod did mainly box type woodworking, entertainment centers, bookcases, kitchen cabinets, etc. When we moved to Tennessee, I saw an ad for a woodturning club. It sounded interesting, so I joined the Cumberland Woodturners. Since joining, I have been actively involved. I have been the club President a number of times, the Treasurer, Video, and currently the Secretary and WEB Master. I also belong to the AAW, Middle Tennessee Woodturners, and the Segmented Woodturners (A Chapter of the AAW). I have done several woodturning demonstrations for the local clubs.

The purpose of the wood turning clubs is to share information with others. Rod started turning small bowls, Pens, bottle stoppers and craft things. These items started to pile up because I did not have an outlet for them. I decided to start doing Segmented work. Some or the pieces that I make now have thousands of pieces of wood. This has slowed down the number of items that I produce. Since I enjoy woodturning so much, I can spend time in my workshop and not have too many things pile up.
