John's photography class description:

I have been photographing artwork for 30 years or more and have helped artists get into some of the top shows and get their work in magazines and books. In this class I will try to show you simple and inexpensive ways to photograph your fine woodworking.

  • I will discuss the qualities of photographs needed to enter juried shows and exhibits.
  • I will discuss the different lights you can use from a flashlight to professional and how to set them up.
  • We will talk about light balance and types of lamps.
  • I will show you how to set the lighting and what types of light modifiers you can build. I will discuss backgrounds, exposure, and proper focus.
  • I will show lens choices and make a brief discussion on tripods.
  • Then I will take you through the process of actually shooting an image. It is a trial and error process because every object is different and I will show you how to see what needs to be changed and how to change the lighting.
  • I will also discuss the use of light tents that seem to be the rage right now. I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
  • During our shoot, we will see problems and then I will take you through the steps to solve these problems.
