Sculptured Rocker and Low Back Chair Hands On Classes with Charles Brock

Fine woodworkers have had building a sculptured rocker or low back chair on their bucket list of projects since the first time they saw them.

“Build a Sculptured Rocker with Charles Brock '' is a premier woodworking class. The rocker's hard and soft lines with numerous s-curves give it an unequaled organic look, one that also looks as if it were moving, even when sitting still. Charles' teaching and passion for building this chair will inspire you to extend your woodworking journey to greater heights of achievement.

The Low Back Chair is a perfect composition of a minimalist chair with perfectly faired parts that give it a look as if it were carved from one block of wood. For dining or sitting it is a pleasurable experience as a harmonious blend of comfort and beauty.

Charles Brock teaches both of these chairs in Hands On Classes at Charles Woodworking Educational Studio South of Nashville, TN.. You will be immersed in a complete woodworking experience that will forever change your woodworking. See the schedule of classes and plan your future.

Sculptured Rocker Class Information

Fine Woodworkers have been inspired to build this bucket list project since the first time they saw one. My hands-on class can teach you how! Class Tool List: (SEE PICTURE of TOOLS)

Auriou Rasps are my first Choice! Combi Rasp (On the left) – 5 Grain on one side with 9 on the other, Modeler’s Rasp (On the Right) 13 Grain, Most Importantly the Cabinetmaker’s Rasp 12″ (Center) – 10 Grain. (Marking Knife, A 6 ” Square, Fractional Dial Calipers, Lie Neilsen Small Router Plane, Wheel Type Marking Gauge, Tape Measure (Not longer than 16 ft. I will have some of these items to use so don’t fret!

Note on Auriou Rasp Availability:

Auriou Rasps are sometimes in short supply at Highland Woodworking, Lie-Nielsen Tools and other retailers in North America. The most important Auriou rasp to bring to class is the #10-12″ Cabinetmakers Rasp. Darex Premium Hand Cut Rasps are a good substitute. Great quality but only three rasps in the set with no modeler’s rasp. Highland Woodworking has these rasps. Tools for Working Wood makes a Gramercy Line of Hand-Cut Rasps. The 12″ Cabinetmaker’s Rasp 8-tpi is a good replacement for this rasp. It is about 80% of the quality, but it may be the best available. Here is the link to their site.

If you drive to the school the rocker will break down to fit in your automobile for the drive back. If you fly, UPS is located nearby and will ship it to your address.

We begin at the crack of 9AM CT each day and finish up at 5PM unless we choose to do differently.

You will fill out a Liability Waiver before starting the class on Monday.

We generally go to lunch as a group. No one can be left in the building during lunch.

Finishing the rocker:
When you return home you will have some work to do to finish your rocker. Most woodworkers have all their parts cut-out and rough shaped with all joinery except attaching the sleds (which can’t be done until the upper part of the chair is shaped completely, because the weight of the upper chair influences placement of the sleds). The holes in the headrest will have been drilled but the 3/8″ end of the spindles will need to be tapered and fitted (sometimes this is accomplished during the class).

There is much to do in The Nashville, Tennessee area, so bringing a spouse is not a bad idea. Look online for tickets to events at the Ryman, Franklin Theater and Grand Ole Opry. Most of the events are sold out well in advance and they have events all during the week as well as weekends.

Let me know how I can help.
